I have Valentine Hess, b. Hesson, Dormstadt, Germany in 1824, an early migrant to Indiana, stopping in a number of counties before Decatur Co. Three of his sons (Jacob, Henry and Charles) migrated to Sonora, Calif. One son, Charles Hess, remained in the St. Paul, IN area. I believe he kept a saloon and raised hunting dogs. One of their sisters was my grandfathers first spouse. Perhaps it was one of George Hess' sons who married Gladys Smith?
