Hello, I am searching for any and all information concerning the Wamsley family of Fountain County, Indiana. This research centers around Fanny Wamsley that married Reuben Putnam on December 18, 1833 in Fountain County. I'm not entirely sure who this Reuben Putnam is but he is probably one of the two men of the same name that appear in the 1840 Indiana Census. Here are those two Census listings: Logan, Fountain County, Indiana 1840 Reuben Putnam Jr. 00010001-1-30001001 Richland, Fountain County, Indiana 1840 Reuben Putnam Sr. 00000100001-11101 Indeed there were two Reuben Putnams living in Fountain County at the same time. The "other" Reuben Putnam was married to Nancy Fix. I believe that Reuben "Senior" is the one that was married to Nancy Fix and that Reuben "Junior" is the one married to Fanny Wamsley. I have done a lot of looking but I haven't been able to find out any other information about Reuben Putnam and Fanny Wamsley. They don't seem to appear in any Census records before or after 1840. Does anyone have any additional information about this family? The only possible clue as to Fanny's origins is that there was another Wamsley who also got married in Fountain County about the same time. Thomas O. Wamsley married Sarah Ristine on December 30, 1834 in Fountain County. I have been able to gather some information about Thomas O. Wamsley which is listed below: "Thomas O. WAMSLEY 1805 - 11 Oct 1873 BIRTH: 1805 DEATH: 11 Oct 1873 Family 1: Susannia BEAUTY\BATTY Kate WAMSLEY Family 2: Unknown wife of Thomas WAMSLEY Luzina WAMSLEY Sarah Jane WAMSLEY James H. WAMSLEY Gafayette WAMSLEY Jerome B. WAMSLEY +George H. WAMSLEY Kate A. WAMSLEY" The above information comes from the following website: http://lisagene.com/gedcom/html/d0000/g0000063.html It would appear that Sarah (Ristine) Wamsley died and Thomas O. Wamsley married second Susan Beatty / Batty. Here is some more information I found on the Internet about this family: "By 1855, Susan was married to her third husband, Thomas O. WAMSLEY. Per her daughter Ratoria's obit, by 1857 her family had moved to Knox Co., MO and they are in the 1860 census there, with his children from a prior marriage. Thomas Wamsley had been a neighbor to Samuel Woodworth (Susan's 2nd husband) during the 1840 census of Henry County, Iowa. She had one daughter with Thomas, Kate Wamsley, born ca 1855. Thomas died in Oct. 1873 and is buried in Knox Co., MO. Their land estate was located in Shelton Twp, Knox Co., MO., section 22. In 1870 Susan andThomas were living in Salt River Twp, Knox Co., MO, and in 1880 Susannawas living with her daughter Nancy LEE in Edina, Knox Co. MO." The above information comes form the following website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohclark/query002.htm I suspect that this Thomas O. Wamsley may be related to Fanny Wamsley (who married Reuben Putnam) and they may be siblings. Listed below are Thomas O. Wamsley's appearances in the other Census years. Here is his lising in the 1840 Census: Henry County, Iowa 1840 Thos O Wamsley 000121-20001 And here he is in the 1850 Census: Liberty, Jefferson County, Iowa 1850 Thos O Wamsley 45 OH Sarah Wamsley 35 OH Luzina Wamsley 13 IN James H Wamsley 10 IA Sarah J Wamsley 19 IA Lafayette Wamsley 8 IA Jerome Wamsley 5 IA Geo H Wamsley 3 IA Living next door to him in the 1850 Census is a another Wamsley family who is definitely related closely: Liberty, Jefferson County, Iowa 1850 VH Wamsly 35 OH Catherine Wamsley 30 OH Sarah E Wamsley 8 IA Martha E Wamsley 5 IA Ursley Wamsley 1 IA This "VH" Wamsley later turns out to be "Vinson" or "Vinton" Wamsley as he later appears in Iowa in the 1860 Census. In the meantime Thomas O. Wamsley moved to Missouri where he appears in the 1860 Census: Salt River, Knox County, Missouri 1860 Thomas O Wamsly 55 OH Susan Wamsly 50 PA Luzina Wamsly 23 IN Sarah J Wamsly 20 IA James H Wamsly 19 IA Lafayette Wamsly 17 IA Jerome B Wamsly 15 IA George H Wamsly 11 IA Kate A Wamsly 5 IA Eliza J Crawford 16 IA Retosia Crawford 13 IA Elizabeth Woodworth 11 IA And here is who I suspect is Thomas' brother Vinson (or maybe Vinton?) Wamsley in the 1860 Census: Washington, Appanoose County, Iowa 1860 Vinson Wamsley 46 OH Catherine Wamsley 41 IN Sarah E Wamsley 19 IA Martha E Wamsley 16 IA Ursula P Wamsley 10 IA Mary C Wamsley 7 IA Based on these Census listings Thomas O. Wamsley was born about 1805 in Ohio and Vinson H. Wamsley was born about 1814 in Ohio. They are certainly brothers. Are they related to the Fanny Wamsley who married Reuben Putnam (1833) in Fountain County, Indiana, a year before Thomas O. Wamsley (1834) was also married there? Thomas O. Wamsley didn't seem to have lived in Fountain County, Indiana long, if he did at all. He did marry Sarah Ristine there though which may mean that he is connected to Fanny Wamsley. I hope this information is useful to other researchers. If anyone has any additional information about these families please post a message here. I am especially interested in any information about the Putnams of Fountain County, Indiana. Thanks, Matt Putnam Whitman, Mass. |
