Wish I had more for you. Have you tried the 1880 census for Bangor, Maine? There might be something there. A long shot could be the 1900 census for Brooklyn, 12th ward.
Also, I've found pension records give a lot of information. I have some from my gggrandfather Sullivan from the Civil War, and the names of his wife and all his children, along with their birthdates, are included. I would think since Jack's father served in the army there may be something there. Unfortunately, the price of obtaining pension records seems to have skyrocketed since I last sent for mine.
It's occurred to me that Jack's brother Con may have been named Cornelius?
