Killed by Train
Cornelius McDevitt, 67 year of age and a Confederate veteran was struck by a New Orleans and Northeasten switch engine the morning and died from the effect shortly before 3 o'clock the afternoon.
Mr. McDevitt was a member of the J. L. Power Comp. Confederate Veterans and was one of the number of awarded crosses honor a few nights ago by the local chapter Daughters of the Confederacy. His business down town this morning was for the porpose of having his name engraved on the cross. The Northeasten switch engine was moving some cars near the passenger depot and the old gentleman attemdted to cross in front of it. He succeeded in crossing, but in attempted to climb upon the depot platform fell backward, striking the pilot of the engine. He was knocked several feet, and never regained consciousness.
Mr. McDevitt was a native of Ireland and came to this country when quite young. For many years he lived near Paulding, Jasper country, and only moved here a few years ago. He leaves quite a large family and numerous relative in this and Jasper county.
