My great grandfather, James McGilton Chaney, was born 3 July 1849 in Maryland. He is listed in the 1850 Federal Census as James McJ, 1 yr old, and the only child of John Chaney, 32, and Eliza Watts, 20. Given the difference in their ages it's possible that Eliza was not John's first wife, which may mean he has additional children from an earlier marriage. Maryland is noted as both John and Eliza's birthplace. At the time of the census they lived in Ward 18, Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland. It appears that John and Eliza both died prior to 1853, perhaps during an outbreak of yellow fever.
James McGilton Chaney, appears in the Cherokee Nation, I.T. around 1874 and marries Julia Brown, Cherokee. James is said to have been a telegraph operator, coming to Indian Territory from Pennsylvania, but I haven't been able to find records to confirm this information. James and Julia had 10 children. He died 19 Dec 1926 and is buried in Nowata, OK. I have a lot of information about James' I.T./OK history, but nothing between his birth in 1849 and his marriage in 1874.
Any help filling the gap between Jame's birth in Maryland and his appearance in Indian Territory would be greatly appreciated. Having been orphaned by the time he was 5, James may have been raised by relatives. I haven't found where the McGilton family marries into the Chaney or Watts family, but believe they are a part of James's family tree due to his middle name.
