I really could use some help with our early McGINTY history. My great great grandfather John McGINTY Sr. I was born in Ireland 1799-1800. His wife was Sarah. Their first child Robert was born in Canada in 1828 and their daughter Sarah was born in Canada in 1831. Their next son, John McGinty (my great grandfather) was born in 1833 in NY and then Thomas was born 1837 in Indiana. 1842, 1846 and 1847 were the birth dates of their next three children in Dubuque County, IA; William, Samuel and Jane.
From family records, John McGinty II had a cousin Pat Lanaghan or Lanahan in Sand Creek, CO around 1879. I have located a Matthew Lanaghan that married Catherine McGinty (Kate) in 1891 in Clinton IA. Catherine was the daughter of Bernard McGinty and Catherine Murphy. Bernard was born 1829 in Ireland.
You mention Lanahan's and McGintys immigrating via Canada and through New York. I know my McGinty's worked on the Canals. I don't know where they came from in Ireland. It is our understanding that John McGinty Sr. I came over with brothers and a father. I don't know if he and Sarah were married before they went to Canada.
I have a lot of information posted on our family web page and would appreciate any tips you may have.
