There is a large group of Mo(o)(re)field's researching on this name in it's various ways of spelling. We are located on the Yahoo Groups site called Morefield Homeplace.

What our research into early courthouse records has revealed is the name for the most part started as Morefield and began getting spelled Moorefield around 1817 or so. We have found that the name has been spelled Morefield, Moorefield, Moorfield, Moefield, Mofield, Marfield Merrifield and many other ways. It appears that as the families migrated westward into TN and KY some settled there and others went on into Illinois and other states. My line settled in Graves county, KY and then into Williamson County, Illinois. I have seen on a marriage license my greatgrandfather's sister name shown as Virginia Mofield and on the minister's return as Virginia Morefield. I have found in census records where the name was given as Morefield and the same family called Mofield in other places. I am sure that the changing of the spelling came about from the way the name was spoken and the way the person writing it down understood it. So many of those who came west could not read or write. So they would not know if the name was written right or wrong. I have found that I have to keep an open mind about the spelling of the name and consider all variations. I had trouble finding Green Morefield in one of the early census as shown on I did not find and Morefield's listed in their index. When I decided to look for just Green I found only one in that county and it was Green Moxefield. After going to the original census record I read the name clear as Morefield. Green is one who it seems came out of Tennessee and stayed in Western KY. Many of his descendants are known as Mofield's. I have seen family lines show him as Mofield but so far in legal records only as Morefield. Those of us researching the Mo(o)(re)field line are very interested in the TN group with any spelling of the name.
