The only Court Documents we have are the marriage record of John Riggs and Cynthia Lawson, and the Bastardy Bond Court Record that shows Elizabeth Lawson was the mother of Cynthia Lawson b.c. 1795 in Stokes County, NC. Both Stokes and Surry border each other and were formed from Rowan County,NC.
There appears to be no doubt that there were two John Riggs in Surry County during the late 1700's and early 1800's. However, there doesn't seem to be any court records to prove which John Riggs married Cynthia Lawson.
Without any court records to prove otherwise, we can not state that the Cynthia b.c. 1808 listed in the 1850 Surry County Census is, infact, Cynthia Lawson... that's only speculation. We know there were many, many Lawsons in both Surry and Stokes Counties at that time, so it is conceivable there were more than one Cynthia and perhaps more than one Cynthia Lawson ? For now, we only know the bastard child of Elizabeth Lawson b.c. 1795 in Stokes County, NC was Cynthia Lawson.
Anyone reading this thread that has knowledge of a court document to support the Cynthia Riggs, born c. 1808 maiden name was Lawson, please let us know.
