Mrs. Aletha Wilson Chaffee
Mrs. Aletha Wilson Chaffee was born in Hopkington, Deleware county, Iowa.When five years of age her parents moved to Waterloo, where she grew to womanhood, and where her parents still reside.Mrs. Chaffee received her early education in the city schools of Waterloo and at a private acadmey conducted by Mrs. Julia Bundy Richards.
In 1874 she was married to Newton M. Chaffee, then the junior member of the firm of Chaffees Bros., dealers in groceries andprovisions, located at the corner of Jefferson and Fouth street, Waterloo.
Mrs. Chaffee has always been a close student and has given special study to literature, art and science, at one time taking a four year course in correspondence at the School of Evangelists at Himberlin Heights, and gained as high degree as was ever given in that department.
She has been an active member of the Church of Christ since 1882, serving as deaconess, organist and Sunday school teacher almost continually.
In 18886 she learned the milliner's trade and came to Washington in 1888, locating at Ellensburg, where she opened a millinery store, but was burned out in the sweeping fire of 1889.She then moved to Medical Lake and engaged in the same business, and after two years came to Cheney, where she put in a stock of millinery, continuing in that work for eight years.She has since been assisting her husband in real estate business, of which they have extensive holdings in the city.
Mrs. Chaffee has been a member of the Morning Star Rebekah lodge since 1899 and has served the lodge as chaplain, warden, vice grand, noble grand and secretary.She is now serving as noble grand for the second time, and is Past President of the district assembly.
