CHALFANT MYSTERY

I'm looking for information on Millard Chalfant.

He was born in Feb. 10th 1904... 1920 census says he was born in VA.

He is somehow attached to my Mary Ellen (Ella)Balsley Chalfant. In the 1920 census it shows them both as boarders in a sleazy boarding house in Buffalo NY. She 40 and he 16! Now that raises my curiosity. Was this her son or husband?
Could she have married a 16 yr old? There is no sign of a husband. Ella is from Fayette Co. PA

Family records have her married to a Chalfant and I thought his name was Millard too.

I found the cemetery ticket for her burial, she died in 1921 of acute appendicitis. I went to the cemetery office and they said she was in a paupers grave because her husband was a sailor and disappeared not paying for her burial. (It is possible he had no money). Could the cemetery be mistaken and the sailor was her son?

SS records have him living last in San Bernadino CA. He died in 1985.

Anyone recognize anything?
