David- I have the Civil War pension records of a Capt. Thomas CHALLENOR, who d. at Belleville,IL on 10 Mar. 1894.The 1850 Federal census shows him as County Constable of St. Clair,age 34,b. England, living in Belleville,St. Clair Co. with wife Ann ,3 daus and a son Henry R.,age 11. Ann was still living in 1900 and d. 3 Dec 1908.
There might be a connection.
