It is thought there was another son, Peter Buchanan, who went south, of whom nothing further is known. The family cannot not say for sure that the grandmotherís name was Hannah Chamberlain. BIOGRAPHICAL
This manís connection to Benjamin4 (Edmund3-2, William 1) is not proven, but the available evidence indicates this to be a reasonable assumption.
According to the family traditions, Benjamin Chamberlain was said to have come from Connecticut before 1767, accompanied by his brother John. He located near Sparta, Sussex Co., NJ, on a farm later owned by his great grandson Samuel H. Maines. He was a farmer and shoemaker and evidently a member or adherent of the Presbyterian Church of Sparta. His tombstone in the Sparta Presbyterian Church graveyard reads: ìIn memory of Benjamin Chamberlin, who departed this life November 29, 1816, aged 69 years.î
On 5 Jan 1771, Perkins Byam, of Morristown, Morris Co., NJ, made his will which contains the following: ìIf my son dies under age, then his share is to be given to the surviving children of my sister Martha Chamberlain.î This will was proved 28 Jan 1771 and his Inventory was taken on 15 Feb 1771 (New Jersey Wills, Liber K, P. 303).
From the Sussex county land records of Grantors: Benjamin Chamberlain and Martha his wife, conveyed land on 7 Apr 1813 (Liber AZ, P. 29); Benjamin Chamberlain and Patty his wife conveyed land on 30 June 1813 (Liber CZ, P. 39).
