My GGGM was Mary/Mariah/Maria (Chatter) Brown recorded as born NYS USA about 1927; location and parents unknown at this time. I found the variants of her given name in many public documents but only her maiden surname name "Chatter" once in public records - a Town of Mt. Washington, Berkshire Cty MA birth record for her youngest child Estella Brown (b. April 1858 there) who was a sister to my GGF Daniel Brown. Mary married a free-black man named Daniel Brown (b. abt 1805 NYS USA) sometime around 1850 probably next-door in Columbia Cty NY. He died in Mt. Washington Jan 1858 and Mary/Mariah took her younger children into the Columbia Cty Poor House, Ghent NY in Dec 1858, where she died in Dec 1863.

I only found a few Mary's with the surname "Chatter" in the 1850-1860 USC .... Poor Houses in Montgomery Cty NY and Dutchess Cty NY and an inmate in Poughkeepsie NY. Also one "Cater" birth record via internet in an Albany NY Dutch Church which did list parents.

Any help in determining her birth place and/or parents extremely appreciated.
