Don't know much about your particular ancestor but I have a lot of Chattwoods in Edenfield (Lancashire UK) in 1800 to 1900 time region and the spelling seems very variable as between Chatwood/Chattwood. Of course it seems to have fixed now we are more literate - different forms for the different branches. In Edenfield one couple gave rise to lots of sub-families.
