Thank you for the continued input Yvonne, at, I never use the index even when available. I prefer to go page by page, and you can imagine the hours necessary to load 100 or more images. After my last post here to you, I went back and looked at some more images for that 1790 census. I found a few more Chancy or Chaneys on page 19 I think it was...not too sure now, I saved the image and can e-mail it to you so that you can look at it close if you like. The lower case 'c' or 'e' as the case may be does appear to be an 'e' if the image is enlarged enough to see the way the letter was made. In most of this census takers lower case 'e's the line went thru the top and then back over very slightly to form the e. when he made a 'c' he went slightly higher over top of what would become the 'c'. There is still a nagging question in my mind tho because as I see other surnames that could only contain a 'c', they still look like an 'e' to me, and vice-versa for the names that could only be an 'e', thet look like it could be a 'c'. We will probably never know for sure.

Just this morning I recieved an e-mail from a guy researching the Chaney surname, and in a census somewhere the individual was enumerated as Chaney, later this person was in court and the court docs indicate, whos right?
