Cliff: The NYPL indicated two obits for D.M. Chauncey, the one you transcribed and the other for January 30, 1883 (8:2); clearly the second belongs to Daniel. In reqriting your note, I also noticed that you refer to David's brother as Daniel M, not Dabiel W. However, I know for certain that the man I am looking for, brother to D.M. Chauncey, in CA during the Gold Rush, was D.W. In 1857, the San Francisco Herald ran daily blurbs listing "D.W. Chauncey" as a subscription agent. Could the NYT be wrong? I'll have to check the obit myself, but I confess to being a little confused. In passing, you might be interested to note that D.M. Chauncey, in early 1857, was a fireman and suffered a broken leg in an accident due to holes in the street. He must have left for NY shortly afterward.
