Hi Mary,

There are a dozen 19th century Chavanas from Alabama listed in the Latter Day Saints website:

Go to http://www.familysearch.com/ click on Search, enter Chavana as the last name (without a first name), select United States and click on Search.

My Chavanas go back to the mid 1700s in Lampazos, NL, (Northern) Mexico. Since all of the Chavanas found at that website for the US are from the 1800s, I wonder if their ancestors migrated from Northern Mexico.
