What does the "S" in your William S. Cheek stand for?My Grandfather's name was William Sherman Cheek and he probably was born in the mid 1860's in Southern, Kentucky very close to the Tennessee line (and could have actually been born in Tennessee). His mother's name could have been Jane.As an adult he probably spent considerable time in Barren County, Cumberland County, Glasgow (city), Burkesville (city) [sometimes spelled as "Burksville" in olden days], and Summer Shade (village). All those places being in Kentucky. But, he also probably had contact with a wide area throughout mid to Southern Kentucky and northern Tennessee because he operated the mail delivery by stagecoach which included at a minimum a route that went from Glasgow through Summer Shade and on to Burkesville, Kentucky. My William Sherman Cheek was probably most often known as Sherman Cheek, but I have heard he also was known as Will Cheek or W. Sherman Cheek.I remember seeing a birth certificate for one of his sons listing him as W. Sherman Cheek.Obviously, my William Sherman Cheek is NOT LIKELY to be your William S. Cheek, but sometimes the given names of well-liked or cherished ancestors get passed down in the family. In the case of my own children, the passage "skipped" the immediate next generation, as they are named after grandparents and great-gandparents.
