Hello everyone,
Jesse Cheek and Delilah Walters Cheek are my 3rd great-grandparents.
Their daughter Janie married my 2nd great-grandfather, Mitchell Layman. Janie (1848-1879) is buried in Cookston Cemetery in Sequatchie County, TN. Mitchell died 4 months after Janie and is buried in the same cemetery.
Their son George Washington Layman (1877 - 1938) married Julia Etta Ross (1881 - 1919 died in Spanish Flu Pandemic) and their daughter Eliza Jane Layman was my grandmother.
Eliza Jane (1907- 1982) married William Garrett Smith (1892- 1966) and their daughter Emma Grace (1932- 2003) was my mother.
I would be extremely interested in exchanging information on my Layman and Ross families for anything anyone has on the Cheek and/or Walters line. I have very little on Delilah and nothing on Jessie other than what I have found online.I have seen the Cherokee references and my Granny Eliza used to tell me that she was part Cherokee on her Daddy's side and I really didn't think too much about it since my mother and I are both fair skinned, blue-eyed blondes. Granny had jet black hair and dark brown eyes with medium dark skin. All her brothers and sisters were darker than me too.I wish now I had listened more to her stories about growing up in Marion and Grundy Counties and all the family stories she told. All Granny's siblings have passed away, as well as my Mom and her siblings, so I have no one to get oral history from.
Anyway, I've rambled enough. Thank you all for posting your family information here on the Genforum board and I look forward to hearing from my Cheek family.
