James Cheney/Hannah Boynton 1800s Vermont
This post is made to summarize my research into the family of James Cheney and Hannah (Boynton)Cheney.James is listed in Pope's "The Cheney Genealogy" on pages 337 and 417.I have been able to confirm most of what Pope has stated, with a couple of exceptions noted below.
James Cheney was b. Dec 1766 bapt. 11 Jan 1767 in Bradford (now Groveland), Essex Co., MA, the 4th son and 8th child of Peter and Rose (Hardy) Cheney. [Note: Pope has him as 3rd son and 6th child.]Hannah Boynton was b. 12 Feb 1771 in Bradford to Samuel and Ruth (Hardy) Boynton. They were married in Bradford on 9 Sept 1788.Pope says they removed to Londonderry NH.The only evidence of this is the 1810 census entry, which has two James Cheney in Londonderry. One has children of about the right age for James and Hannah's, but with some children missing. The 1800 census for Londonderry was lost.As James is not in the 1800 Bradford MA census, it is presumed he removed to Londonderry before this.
James and Hannah removed to Coit's Gore (later Waterville) in Franklin Co. (later Lamoille Co.) in upstate Vermont in 1810 or 1811.They appear in the census there beginning in 1820.James died. 23 Feb 1860.Hannah died in July 1833.They had 11 children as follows.
1. Lydia b 3 Dec 1789, d 10 Oct 1809.Her death is recorded in the Bradford MA VR, but I suspect the family was in Londonderry. The source of that record is a private death book, which might well include deaths of people who did not die in Bradford but who were known to the book-keeper.
2. Joseph b 5 Apr 1791 d. 18 July 1872, mar 29 Aug 1811 to Mary Washburn.Resided in Waterville and Belvidere, VT
3. Ruth b 21 Aug 1793 d 26 Sep 1804
4. Hannah b 10 Aug 1795 d 29 Aug 1851 mar 3 Aug 1823 [Pope incorrectly says 1824; my date from Waterville VR] to Benjamin Fletcher.Residences and children unknown, except for a son John.
5. James b 9 oct 1797, d 16 Dec 1884, mar. 5 Aug 1827 to Harriet Webb.Residences and children as listed by Pope.
6. Sally b 2 Feb 1800, d 20 Mar 1823, apparently unmarried.
7. Andrew b 14 Oct 1802, d 1 Oct 1804
8. Peter b 13 Oct 1804, d 31 Jan 1859, mar 10 Mar 1832 to Sarah Thomas.Resided in Waterville; four children found in Waterville VR.
9. Samuel Boynton b 29 Sept 1807, d. 31 Mar 1869, mar 20 Sep 1831 to Lucy Barrett Wright.Resided in Waterville; removed to Lowell VT in 1846.This is my wife's great-great-grandfather, and I have lots of information on him. [Note that Pope gives his name as "Boynton Cheney" and his birth date as 30 Sept 1806.Above date is from Waterville VR.]
10. Lydia (again) b 16 June 1810, d 8 Apr 1872, mar 4 Jan 1829 to spouse unknown; issue unknown.No further information.
11. Abner Jones b. 28 Feb 1815, d. 1861.Residences and marital status/issue unknown.
The Waterville VR (LDS microfilm 0029080)have much info about this family, especially for the sons Joseph, Peter and Samuel, some for the Benjamin Fletcher family.
One other source note: Transcription of "Gazetteer of Lamoille and Orleans Counties, Vermont 1883-1884 (http://www.rootsweb.com/~vermont/Lamoille/LamoilleWaterville.htm) says "James Cheney, from Hanover, NH, located in the northern part of this town [ie. Waterville] at an early date, where he resided until his death in 1810.He reared a family of seven children, three of whom remained in town."I believe that this is the James Cheney I describe here, and the 1810 date of death is either an error in the original, a transcription error, or is supposed to have been the date he arrived at Coit's Gore/Waterville.James and Hannah raised 7 children who reached adulthood and married, and three sons (Joseph, Peter, and Samuel) remained in the area.Or, if you count Samuel as having left the area, then Hannah (Cheney) Fletcher is the other one who remained.
