Hi, Ann,
I'm not sure which William you're referring to; so I'll put in a bit of extra here about several members of this extended family.(Notice the different spelling of the last name, as best I can determine the way the person spelled it himself/herself as an adult.)
William Fendon ChEney was the son of John ChEney who has been proven to be the brother of William ChAney, Bailey ChAney, James ChAney, Jr, and George ChAney.All FIVE brothers (AND the man who is thought to be their father) lived in/near the town of NinetySix, SC at the time of the American Revolution - according to family lore, James Jr was 'killed by the Tories' [He probably died shortly before his widow Priscilla and his brother John were appointed as administrators of his estate in April 1782.]; according to extant records John was shown to be an active participant IN the Patriot army; and William and George have been proven to have 'contributed beef (and other supplies) to the Patriots.(Several researcher maintain that the brother Bailey was the person later listed as BELEY CHENEY in records from that area; but my own research shows that the signatures of (1) BELEY CHENEY and (2) the man who signed his name as "Bailey Chaney" and was PROVEN to be a brother of William ChAney were definitely different.)
About 1790, William and Bailey left SC to migrate to the "Cole's Creek area, near Natchez, MS".Subquently, (by 1811) children/grandchildren of both men lived in the following MS Counties:Adams, Jefferson, Claiborne, and Amite.
About the time the war ended (1784), John moved with his family to the Robertville area of SC just a few miles upriver from Savannah, GA - the sons/daughters/widow/others of John followed William, Bailey, and George to Woodville, Amite Co, MS (near the Natchez area) about 1810 (with some of the family leaving in the fall/winter of 1810 and the remainder leaving within two weeks of the death of John in early 1811.Soon after their arrival in MS, William Fendon ChEney several miles west (Rapides Parish, LA) where he founded the town of Cheneyville, LA and many of his descendants can still be found.
William ChAney, Sr. was the father of William ChAney, Jr, Mary Sealey Chaney (md Grimball Robert), Bailey Eliphalet Chaney, James Norris Chaney, and Susannah Chaney (md William Cole).Most all these children (except Mary Robert who died young while the family was still living in SC near Savannah, GA) and in-laws lived in the area near Natchez, MS most of their lives.
Bailey ChAney was the father of James J., Mary, William J., Sahar, Bailey Darby, Thomas Young, and Elizabeth.Most of these siblings lived out their lives in either Feliciana Parish, LA or Issaquena (now Sharkey) County, MS.
George was the father of George E. Chaney (who was buried in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA).
John was the father of George Bailey, John, Jr, Ann, Elizabeth, William Fendon, Mary, Susannah "Susan", David, Thomas Green, and Hampton Johnson.Most of these siblings lived out their adult lives in/near Cheneyville, one exception was Hampton Johnson Cheney who spent a time as Postmaster at Nashville, TN before returning to his 'hometown' of Cheneyville before his death/burial there in 1836.
{So far, I have found no reason some of the members of this extended family used the ChAney spelling and others used the ChEney spelling; if anyone finds a logical reason, please let me know.}
