Cherry & Hicks/Hix Jackson Co., TN
My connection to the Cherry family is indirect and confusing. My great-great grandparents William and Mary Bryan(t) Had a John in their household in McMinn Co. TN in 1850.He is listed as John Bryan in my great grandmother Sarah Jane Bryan’s Bible.John was born 9 Mar 1837.William and Mary were supposed to have been married 26 Jan 1837 so John may have been a step-son.When he married, he was found in the 1860 census of Putnam Co. listed as John W. Hix and his brother Samuel Henry Bryan is living with him.John Washington Hicks/Hix married first to Nancy Jane Jackson and had sons Jackson Porter Hicksand Washington Parker Hicks.Their dates of birth are given under the name Hicks.John W. Hicks was still listed with his wife in 1880.In 1900, I find John W. Hix, born March 1837 in Jackson Co. TN living with wife Mary E. who was born June 1851.They had been married 20 years and had 1 child who was living.Living with them was Jane Cherry sister-in-law, born Feb 1852, servant Katherine Whitaker born March 1850, and Dibbrell Hix, son born Aug 1882.What is strange is that the marriage records of Jackson Co. show that Julia A. Cherry married John W. Hix 11 Dec 1890.Also, Loose records from the Jackson Co. Chancery/Circuit Court has:
1891 Hix, J.W. ~vs~ Cherry, PleasL.S. Cherry
1895 Hix, J.W. ~vs~ Long, Jno. S.
Some of John’s family by Nancy Jackson claim John died in 1908 at Goodletsville in Davidson Co. TN but I have not found a death record for him.John served under Co. George Dibbrell in the 25th Infantry CSA as did his brother Samuel H. Bryan.(My part of the family and those in Texas use Bryan and those in TN use Bryant).
