They had two sons, James and John , and a daughter , Margaret.James Chesnut , Sr. was killed in Braddock's defeat in 1755, in Virginia.
From Chesnut Family History Papers
compiled by MissSally Chesnut as dictation of her father James Chesnut
printed in 1919
The place Mulberry was granted to my great great grandmother, Mrs. JAMES CHESNUT by the then King George of England in lieu of pension on a-c of the death of her husband who went with his friend George Washington in 1854 with Braddock to Fort DuQuesne to fight under the British General against the French and Indians --- JOHN (?) CHESNUT was killed with Braddock on that field and his widow emigrated to Knights Hill above Camden and then to Mulberry below Camden, with her two sons, John and JAMES--- JAMES was killed in Florida fighting Spainards and Indians--- JOHN was sole heir to the Camden estates--- his mother married a second time to a Mr. Sutton and moved to Tennessee.
?????????who was killed at Braddock's defeat ?????? James or John ???????was James known as James John Chesnut ?????????
In Hampshire County , proof is offered that James was the oldest son of Alexander and that John was the oldest son of James as Alexander 's property passed to young John upon Mary's death.
Margaret remarried to Jasper Sutton , a ranger, and moved into North Carolina around Mecklenburg area then into South Carolina to Camden, Kershaw County ca 1756
?????????If James was a young boy when he father died, how can he be related to the Chesnutt's of Tennessee????????????If James, John age about 13 and Margaret traveled with their mother and Jasper Sutton to Camden, South Carolina, as children,James can not be thebrother of and John( settled in Tennessee)and Henry(settled in Pennsylvania) ca 1780-1782

Information on John Chesnut and the Camden Chesnut's comes from:
Historic Camden by Kirkland and Kennendy.
John (I) Chesnut was born on the Shenandoah River, Virginia, June 18, 1743.
His parents came with their parents as children from Ireland, settling on the frontiers of Virginia.
lefted Virginia ca 1756, with step father Jasper Sutton and family, moved into North Carolina near Mecklenburg county on into South Carolina, to Kershaw County.
John was a staunch Whig in the Revolution. He was paymaster in the third of the first three regiments, with the rank of Captain.
When the British occupied Camden they took possession of his home, drove his family to Knight's Hill and put him in the Camden prison. He was chained closely to the floor and bore the marks of iron on his ankles to his death.
Orange County, is now Hampshire County, West Virginia.
John is buried at Knight's Hill in Camden, South Carolina.
I have conflicting death dates, on 1818 the other 1813 both agree on day and month.
