Hi Jane
Think I may really be on to something this time..
1st don't believe John Churcher the grocer at Wickham is anything to do with yr emanuel. This John married Deborah Dewey and later Charlotte Hedger, the only son that I know about was called robert. Also the Emanuel from the Levy, aaron etc family definitely not the same - he is on census up to 1871 with his wife Charlotte.
But... found your Emanuel (after a struggle) in 1841, in household of William & sarah Chapman, Romsey Extra. Also in the h/hold was Stephen Churcher (he was a shipwright, later res in Gosport). I couldn't think what the connection might be, but started to dig again after yr latest message.
stephen was bapt 1818 Alverstoke so John & Mary
looking for possible sibs on IGI gave Mary Ann 1823 & Daniel 1827 - note a suspicious looking gap between Stephen & Mary Ann?
IGI has a marriage John Churcher to Mary Martin, St Marys Portsmouth in 1817.
What if Emmanuel was son of John & Mary, and this was wrongly entered in the parish register?
Mary gave her birthplace as Romsey in 1851 (widowed and with unmarried son Daniel). IGI search gave a marriage for Sarah Martin to William Chapman, Romsey 1827 - so possibly the aunt of Stephen Churcher (and Emanuel??).
Circumstantial I know, but looks quite promising...
Let me know if anything turns up.
Kim
