I cannot thank you enough. Your posting plus some serendipity has been the catalyst of a major breakthrough. The Elisha you suggested is not my man, I find him in Jefferson County throughout his life. I have however located my Elisha, he is the third son of Nathaniel Churchill (Nathaniel, Nathaniel, Nathaniel, Joseph, Josiah) and Mrs. Lydia (Osgood) Penfield of Hubbardton, Rutland, Vermont.
I have some additional legwork to do but what I have in the first 24 hours after your posting is:
Elisha Churchill born 5 August 1795 Hubbardton, Rutland, Vermont
died 9 March 1872 East Bethany, Genesee, New York
spouse is Abigail ToBeDetermined born 1787 died 5 Apr 1869
Appears as Elisha Churchel in 1820 Federal Census Hubbardton, Rutland, Vermont Roll 127 Page 124 with one male 26 to 45 (Elisha), one female 26 to 45 (Abigail) and one girl under ten. His brother Nathaniel is on the same census page.
Appears as Elisha Churchill in 1830 Federal Census Batavia, Genesee, New York Roll 90 Page 334 with one male 30 to 40 (Elisha), one female 40 to 50 (Abigail), one boy 10 to 15, two girls under five, two girls 5 to 10, one girl 10 to 15, one girl 15 to 20 (includes my ancestor Eliza Jane and the three sisters of which I am aware). His brother Nathaniel is in Bethany, Genesee, New York where he is found throughout his life..
Appears as Elisha Churchill in 1840 Federal Census Middlebury, Genesee, New York Roll 285 Page 131 with one male 40 to 50 (Elisha), one female 50 to 60 (Abigail), two girls 10 to 15, two girls 15 to 20, one girl 20 to 30 (includes my ancestor Eliza Jane and the three sisters of which I am aware).
Appears as Elisha Churchill age 55 born in Vermont in 1850 Federal Census Bethany, Genesee, New York Roll 507 Page 124 with a Sally Churchill age 45 and Catherine Churchill 23 (a daughter of which I am aware).
Appears as Elisha Churchill age 65 in 1860 Federal Census Bethany, Genesee, New York Roll 756 Page 1118 with wife Abigail age 72, a Catherine age 40, a Lydia H. age 37 (Hepsabeth?), and an Ada E. age 7.
Appears as E. Churchel age 74 in 1870 Federal Census Bethany, Genesee, New York Roll 939 Page 512 with a Catherine age 60
Elisha Churchill is found with others in EAST BETHANY CEMETERY, EAST BETHANY, GENESEE COUNTY, NY (located behind the East Bethany Presbyterian Church on Route 63, an incorporated active cemetery with first burial in 1820. Also called the Presbyterian cemetery)
