The Churchills of Churchill Downs are what we used to call the Virginia Churchills before we came to know that there is at least one other Virginia Churchill family with continuing descendants into the 21st century. The Churchill Downs Churchills descend from the immigrant William, who immigranted to Virginia in the 17th century and became a promnent landowner in tidewater Virginia. One member of this family settled in Kentucky and, having many children, is the forebear of many descendants. It appears that he was the only descendant of William to have continuing Churchill-surnamed descendants.
You will find a considerable number of postings about this family on this forum.
As to Churchill relatives in Rochester, there would seem to be two possibilities. This could be a relatively recent development. Alternatively, it could be a csse of mistaken identity involving one of the three northern branches of Churchills. During the period of settlement in this country the greatest number of Churchills in Rochester and other areas of western New York were from the Connecticut Churchill family. However, members of the Massachusetts Churchill family and the smaller Manhattan Churchill family also moved west from their original areas of settlement. It goes without saying that without more information there is no way of knowing who the Rochester Churchills are to whom you refer.
