Virginia Churchill Families

Just by way of clarification on the Virginia Churchills, as a followup to the messages Abigail Prather Churchill and the Clark family, there are two Virginia Churchill families with known descendants. Both are Oxfordshire Churchills, but for only one has this been established through Y-DNA testing. The more pro9minent family, that of the immigrant William Churchill, has a genealogy which establishes them as Oxfordshire Churchills.

William had only one son, Armistead. Armistead had a large family. One of his sons, Armistead, Jr., moved to Kentucky. He also had a large family with many descendants. As far as we know, his is the only line of descent from William to continue the Churchill surname. There were other fourth generation sons but their fate is not known at this time.

It would be desirable to have members of the Kentucky Churchills take the Y-DNA test since only one Oxfordshire Churchill in England has tested. We do not know whether the DNA of this individual is unrelated to that of the three northern American families becxuse there is not a common ancestor or because there was a so-called undocumented event in the lince of descent. An undocumented event could be an adoption, an illegitimacy, or a 2nd marriage with children misattributed to the wrong father.

Colonial records show several other Churchills in Virginia. The one with documented descendants is a Samuel who settled in NOrthumberland County.

It may be of interest that the William Churchill estate, Wilton, is on the market. A couple of years ago it was on the market for $2 million; it now is on the market for $695,000, including 25 acres of land. The house is on the Virginia register of historic homes.
