The conjecture that Sylvester Churchill "looked like and was related to Winston Churchill" derives from Winston's book, "Hinge of Fate". Winston refers to a letter, along with a photograph and pedigree of Sylvester Churchill, sent to FDR by Anne C. Harrison,a descendant of Sylvester's and who was the wife of the US Minister to Switzerland, Leland B. Harrison. Mrs Harrison remarked on the similarities and FDR passed on the photo and pedigree of Sylvester to Winston Churchill, who remarked favorably on the resemblance.
Above event apparently impressed many to the point some accepted the following pedigree (in part) of Sylvester as fact:
"CHURCHILLS OF DORSETSHIRE"
"JOHN CHURCHILL - London, (Merchant, Supplying
Geo. Endicott of The Mass. Bay Colony
|-----JOHN CHURCHILL, born England, emigrated to Plymouth, Mass., in 1643. Died 1662."
Above link to London's Joseph was advanced by Nathaniel Wiley Churchill in a Boston Post article of 1902. NWC was a major force in the oft referenced genealogical publication (1904), "Churchill Family in America". But, CFA in acknowledging NWC's premise, labelled it conjecture. NWC had died in 1903.
Unfortunately, many sources adopted NWC's article as fact although data has never surfaced to support the notion.
Despite attempts, no details have ever surfaced regarding the personals of London's Joseph Churchill. WHo his parents were, whether he was married with family, remains unknown?? Recent DNA findings for Churchills question of the assertions of NWC.
