Larry, When you say American Plymouth Colony Churchills are related to the English Winston Churchill you are correct. But who is Col/Slyvester Churchill and to which Ancient English Churchill Family did he belong? I've never heard of Slyvester - but then I've never heard of any number of prominent Churchills. Was Sylvester a Devon Churchill or an OXON Churchill?
In England there were two ancient English Churchill families. One was and is the Devon Churchills to which the first Sir Winston belonged and to which the American Plymouth Colony Churchills belong. They reliably date from Normandy in the time before the Conquest.
The other ancient Churchill family are the Oxfordshire Churchills. They date from 1300 in Oxfordshire.
The two Churchill families are NOT AT ALL related.
Devon Churchills belong to DNA Haplogroup I-1a which means they are of Nordic or Viking origin.
The Oxfordshire Churchills belong to DNA Haplogroup R-1b. R-1b is a common Haplogroup in England. Individuals in that group originated in Central Europe and some 13,000 years ago began migrating to the area of England.
Individuals in Haplogroup I-1a and R-1b are NOT AT ALL related.
Who was Co/General Sylvester Churchill and from which English Churchill family did Sylvester originate? Was it the Devon family or the OXON family?
One would have to know to which family group Sylvester belonged to say whether Sylvester was related in any way to Churchills of the Devon Grouping.
