I found this:

Thomas M. McKay
Enlisted 24 Aug 1861 as Sgt.
Mustered into Co. G MA 20th Inf.
Was murdered on 5 Oct 1863 at Rapidan, VA. (as of Co. F)
Was wounded 12 Nov 1862 Fredericksburg, VA.
Promotions:
1st Sgt.
2nd Lt. 5 Sep 1862
1st Lt. 18 Dec 1862
Capt. 22 July 1863
Also served Co. B MA 5th Inf.

I have no info on the murder, which occurred shortly after he became Captain.
