Of course I haven't seen the photo, but...a horn was the symbol of the infantry arm. So it would seem your ancestor was an infantryman. Not a terribly useful deduction, of course, since the vast majority of soldiers were in the infantry. But still, if you found him in an infantry unit, the uniform is at least consistent.
