I think that I have found one of my ancestors, Robert F Conley, listed as a confederate soldier in the 7th Regiment, Missouri Calvary Company E. Being a confederate is in this family's history as his brother-in-law was one of the men which were executed the day after the battle at Kirksville.
I also found Robert F Conley on the Missouri State Archives site as a Union soldier; he is listed as being in the 86th Regiment EMM under Captain HB Foster, enrolled on April 23, 1864 in Kirksville, Adair Co. His age matches my Robert F Conley.
Does anyone have information on the 86th Regiment? I was wondering if it was "forced" enlistment or a change of the Union majority in the area? Was changing your allegiance the politically correct thing to do, so to speak?
Any feedback and information would be greatly appreciated.
