Jan,

Here's a link to a discussion on the Department of the Missouri...it was a way of grouping various armies together by geography and doesn't represent the state in which Mr. Steele was wounded. From what you mentioned, I would think that he was wounded at Pine Bluff.

It sounds as though you already have Steele's compiled service record which, generally, includes all information that was available when the records were transcribed. The recorder apparently noted the source where it was mentioned that Steele was wounded.

Usually, though not always, the recorder wrote down whatever was in that source. It's likely it was just a list of persons wounded at the battle and that nothing else was given. If there was a record of him going to a hospital, then there's usually a notation of that in his service file.

So, that's probably all that you'll find though others may have more ideas.

If you haven't already done so, you should check to see if Steele (or his widow) filed for a soldier's pension based on his service. Federal pension applications (versus their Confederate counterparts) are often a wealth of information as they often include testimonies of neighbors, transcriptions of marriage/Bible records, etc. It may mention this wound that he received...especially if it hindered his ability to work later in life and was considered a factor in his securing a pension.

The pension applications are available from the National Archives in Washington. Mr. Steele may have filed for one and, after his death, his widow may have also filed an application. You can order them online at this link:

Click on the "Find and Request" tab in the upper left and scroll down to "Military Service Records".

Hope this helps and good luck in your search,
Scott
