Laura,

You might check for Robert's service record in the Confederate regiment. It would (probably) note if he had left the regiment (by capture, medical discharge, death or desertion) which may help you determine if the other Conley is the same man.

Here's a link to a company that I've ordered records from before:

http://history-sites.com/research/confedrecs.html#cmsr

I did see this notation on the Missouri Archives website:

Conley, Robert F.
County: Iron
Town: Pilot Knob
Notes: Oath. States Conley is from Adair County, Missouri. Date: 02-11-1863
Microfilm reel: F1468

That is probably an oath of allegiance so these two Conleys may be the same man.

Alternately, you might check to see if Conley or his widow filed for a pension based on his service. That may help clear it up as well.

If looking for a Confederate pension application, the application would have been filed in whatever state he lived in at the time regardless of where his regiment was from. That state's archives would have the Confederate pension applications.

The National Archives in Washington has pension applications for Union service only (not CSA).

Good luck,
Scott
