Laura, I checked online and saw Robert Conley's obituary here: http://mogenweb.org/polk/newobits.htm His is the second from the bottom and does give the death date as 1900 apparently in Adair County but I couldn't be sure. With that in mind, there won't be a pension application for him in Missouri. That state didn't allow Confederate pensions until 1911 and never did give them for the widows either. Whether a pension was available for Union soldiers or their widows, I don't know. I didn't see Robert or Janetta (Jennette, Jennetta, etc.) on an online Union soldier's pension index (ancestry.com). As for Robert's CSA service record, it will consist of several cards giving his date and place of enlistment, perhaps his age, dates present for service, any absence from the unit, etc. There probably wouldn't be any genealogical information, but I suspect that it will show that he, for whatever reason, had left the regiment. Missouri was violently split during the war with pro-Union and pro-Confederate factions fighting amongst themselves. Soldier's switching sides was not uncommon in that area. Here's a link to another service that provides copies. About midway down there are links to sample records which will show you what you can expect to receive. http://www.csawardept.com/genealogy/research/CMSR.html I've ordered several files from the group that I mentioned earlier. They have a reasonable turnaround (about two to three weeks) and I've had no complaints. You never know what is in the records, so it's probably worth sending for a copy. If you are near the Missouri Archives, you could probably get the same copies there. Let me know if you have any questions and I hope that something turns up in your search.
