The uniform is post CW, probably state militia. The easter bonnet he favors is a pickelhaub (pickelhaber?)in summer white. Our government favored copying German uniforms, beginning with the uniform revision of 1872. I don't recall the spiked helmet with the 1872 revision, but it was common with the 1881 patterns. Yes, his shoulder straps indicate he was an officer when this was taken.
Wish I could be more accurate, but I'm away from home and my helpful library. Been in a too hot climate visiting my son in Fountain Hills, now visiting a friend in Tucson for a week.
What was Robert's death year?
