Unfortunately this does occur more often than most researchers would like to see. Although either source could be correct, the most likey one is the more contemporary record. Unless a mistake was later made in transcribing the data, most records made at the time of the occurance should be given precedence over the recollections of a (possibly quite elderly) person years after the occurance.

Do the records show that he was ever captured and held at Point Lookout? If so, perhaps he was exchanged, made his way to Richmond, was hospitalized there, and died there. His widow, years later, could recall Point Lookout, but perhaps did not know, or did not remeber that he actually died in Richmond.
