Hello Lee, Have you ever ordered his Civil War records? NARA - Civil War Pension Files http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/military/civil-war/ I have ordered one in the past, online, and received a 125 page file on one ancestor of mine. They (soldier and wife) had to fill out so many affidavits of birth place information, marriage certificate information, witness statements, etc., etc. in order to apply for pension benefits. Is there a G.A.R. index for Civil War soldiers that lived in Iowa? I know there is an on-line G.A.R. Index on-line for the state of Nebraska. Iowa must have something. IL has "nativity" on its' muster-in / muster-out rolls so the birthplace is known. This gives it more detail than what Ancestry "dot" com has or gives at the present time. Those are held at the State Archives of IL in Springfield (and they are on-line too). Doesn't the State Archives of Iowa have something similar - if not on-line, than at least within their repository? Is there a Jackson County, IA historical/biographical book which lists William Henry Hopkins and where he came from? There is usually a newspaper account of a Civil War reunion of living soldiers in the latter 1800s / early 1900s. Perhaps you've been through all of these suggestions ... I hope you find his birth place in detail! Good luck, Kathleen Notify Administrator about this message?
