Nelda, Yes, men in their fifties did enlist, but rarely. They were not required to serve, and most were just not up to the rigors of marching and fighting. Rather than trying to find out about all the Elijah Stephens you see listed, it would be more efficient to start with your man. Do you know where he lived in 1860? Most men enlisted in units that were formed near their home. By identifying his residence in 1860, and searching the units that were formed nearby, it is quite possible to find him, if he served. The NPS site: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm has 20 men named Elijah Stephens and 19 named Elijah Stevens, but only two serving in Tennessee units. Of course some men enlisted using only initials, and looking for first initial E. adds about 98 men to the list. Still, since only a few are from Tennessee, it might be possible to find him if he is to be found. Of course, nothing here is definitive when you can't find the record. It is possible he served and no record survived. Rick Notify Administrator about this message?
