I recently received a service record package from the National Archives with muster calls etc..., regarding one of my acestors, who enlisted in Captain Coopers Co. 1st Regiment TN Infantry. He enlisted in August of 1861 for a period of 3 years. In May of 1864, a few months before his enlistment was up, he was charged with desertion. About 4 years later, in 1868, the charge of desertion was dropped and his service record was changed to say that he was discharged in September of 1864. That's the background and now for my question and the reason for posting this message: In his service record it says that the charge of desertion was removed by S.O. 52 paragraph 2, HD 2, Department of Cumberland and ordered discharged 17 Sept 1864 by S.O. No. 62, Dept. of Cumberland, D Series, 1868. Common sense tells me that S.O. refers to some section in the Union Army Regulations regarding cases of desertion but I can't seem to find any documentation to tell me what those regulations say. Does anybody know what S.O. 52 and S.O. 62 is all about? Does anybody know where I can get my hands on a copy of those regulations? Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks, David Richardson Notify Administrator about this message?
