After suffering a stinging defeat in his first assault on the Confederate works at Vicksburg, Mississippi, on May 19, General Grant began planning for a seige of the city which would not begin until the 22nd. There was very little action anywhere in the nation on May 20. Of course, many wounded soldiers died days, weeks, or months after a battle. And the sick were dying almost every day. Keep in mind that far more American Civil War soldiers died of disease than as battle casualties.
Of course all of this is almost surely a moot point when it comes to these men. As the previous poster pointed out, Benoni and likely Thomas also were surely not in uniform in 1863.
