Consider the state of communications at the time of the war. Many different lists were being kept in Richmond and other points, and no means existed to track everything about any one soldier. More than likely the widow never really knew exactly what had happened to her husband (a fairly recent CW film is based on that premise).

Since it's unlikely the widow had access to first-hand information, you should start with information found in the soldier's military service file and treat that as reliable.
