My GGG Grandfather was in Company I, 50th NC and was also listed as a Teamster for 2 years of the war. He was 33 years old when called for duty in 1862 making him a little old for this time of the war. It would be another year before they called up young and old. It also listed his pay as $7.50 which I think is more than an Infantry soldier in the CSA was paid in 1862. An account in the Official Records shows that more than 100,000 horses were killed during the War. Wagons were a much sought after target of artillery as they carried ammunition and stores for the troops. The teamster was likely to be near the wagons when fired upon by the enemy and it is likely that many Teamsters were killed while tending the horses and wagons. I would call that killed or wounded in action, though not in the front lines, it was still caused by enemy fire.
