Deserter - 8 NY Cav - searching for records

On the envelope of my ancestor's Compiled Service Records, 7 items are listed. And, indeed, there are 7 cards copied, however they do not complete the picture. Frederick S. Dodge, Co. D, 8th NY Cav. mustered in on Sept. 4, 1862 and deserted at Washington on Nov. 23, 1862. In December, 1862 he is "under arrest on charges preferred." His status is the same on Feb. 28, 1863, and that is the last record - his name is "not on subsequent rolls" of the company. Where should I look next to find out what became of him?

Thanks!
