John,

His service record has a card for a James McCullock showing his admittance into General Hospital #9 in Salisbury
for variola [smallpox] and subsequent death on February 9, 1864.

Another card shows his entry as Jos. McCullock with death February 9, 1864 in Salisbury for "disease" so I'd guess that the transcriber misread "Jos." for "Jas." and put down James in that other record.
