Edward, b. ca. 1561, Westm. England, m. Margaret; was he son of Tom?
According to the parish records of Cliburn parish, in Westmorlandshire (now Cumbria), England, an Edward Cliburn (various alternative spellings) was the father to the following:
Jane Cliburn, baptized November 25, 1582 at St. Cuthbert's church
Eleanor Cliburn, baptized December 13, 1584
Grace Cliburn, baptized January 15, 1587
Thomas Cliburn, baptized July 22, 1588
William Cliburn, baptized November 9, 1595
See the extracts of these parish records electronically publised by the Latter Day Saints at www.familysearch.org.
The baptismal records of Thomas and William Cliburn also show their mother's name as Margaret.Because of the short time span of 18 months between the baptisms of Grace and Thomas, I believe Margaret was probably also the mother of Grace, and quite possibly of Jane and Eleanor.I have not yet found Margaret's maiden name.Does anyone have this information? If so, please share.
I believe that Edward and Margaret were also the parents of a John Cliburn, likely born between about 1590 and 1600, and who had a son named Edward baptized in Cliburn parish on March 3, 1620/1.
I am trying to identify the parents of Edward Cliburn.I am currently pursuing a theory that he was the son of Thomas Cliburn, possibly born between about 1536 and 1542, probably in Cliburn parish, and who died sometime after January 15, 1592/3 (the date on which he was reportedly mentioned in the Will of John Musgrave, of Penrith parish, Cumberland (now Cumbria), England, just North of Cliburn parish (across the River Eamont). Therefore, I think it is possible that Thomas Cliburn's wife was a daughter of this John Musgrave.
Using baptismal records from Penrith parish, I have tentatively identifed other children of Thomas Cliburn as Mabel Cliburn, who married a Robert Dobson in Penrith parish on November 24, 1583, John Cliburn, who married Jane Salkeld in Penrith parish on November 18, 1593, and Edmund Cliburn, who married Janet Raincock in Penrith parish on August 02, 1601.
This Thomas Cliburn was probably the second son of Edmund and Eleanor (Layton) Cliburn.Thomas's older brother was Richard Cliburn (their father's heir, and who married Eleanor Lancaster).
Some researchers indicate that this Thomas Cliburn resided at Hay Close, Hesket-in-the-Forest, Cumberland, England.I believe he is mentioned in "Cumberland Families and Heraldry", by Roy Huddleston and R. S. Boumphrey (1978), and in "The Irish And Anglo-Irish Landed Gentry, When Cromwell Came to Ireland", by John O'Hart (1884), at p. 204.

At p. 108:"[Richard's] brother Thomas, a page in the service of his kinsman, Sir Richard Lowther (the custodian of Mary [Queen of Scots]), doubtless kept him well informed of the secret machinations of the gentry of the north, and he was deep in the counsels of the shrewd and long-headed Gerard Lowther, whom he concealed at Cliburn when pursued by the Warden of the West Marches."
At p. 109:"On the 28th January following [1570], Sir Francis Leeke wrote to Cecil: 'Before receipt of yours for apprehension of Gerard Lowther and Richard Clyburne of Clyburne, gentlemen, we had examined some of their servants, John Craggs and Thomas Clyburne (who had come to town with three geldings of Lowther), about the said Gerard's movements;' and winds up by saying 'I send this letter for life, that order may be taken for Lowther before he has fled far, as he is not well horsed.'"
I believe O'Hart has embellished and invented some.It is not clear that Thomas was a "page" (which in the earlier medieval period was an office typically held by teenaged males on their path to knighthood), and if he was a "servant", there are many offices in which Thomas could have served other than page.Furthermore, I believe the status of Sir Richard Lowther as "kinsman" did not arise until 1594, when Richard Cliburn's grandson, Thomas, married Frances Lowther, daughter of Richard Lowther, an event well after the events of 1569 and the Rising of the North. Finally, there were at least two men, both (or all three) named Thomas Cliburn, who were near contemporaries, and it is not clear that O'Hart did sufficient research to be certain WHICH Thomas Cliburn was the servant of Lowther.
Does anyone have any information about Edward Cliburn or how he relates to the other Cliburns of Cliburn parish? If so, please share, either by posting here or contacting me directly at [email protected].
