My gg grandmother was Julia Clasby. Her parents were Patrick and Bridget Clasby. She was born in Ireland about 1818 possibly Athenry. She married a Michael Cooney from the Roman Catholic parish of Castlegar(just outside galway City) around 1844. They had a son John J Cooney born 1845.The family left Ireland on April 20th 1847 on the ship Albion out of Galway bay during the famine and came through the port of New York. Michael was listed as a farmer. The family first settled down in Springfield Mass for about 3 or 4 years and then went to Kingston NY and settled on a farm. Julia died 11 26 1905 in Kingston and is buried in St Mary's Cemetary in Kingston.

From my reserach on the Clasby name it only seems to appear in this part of Ireland around Galway City. I checked the phone book in Ireland and there are a several Clasby's listed. I stayed in Kinvarra one night last year and I stopped in the West Galway Geneaolgy center and they were most helpful but I have not been able to pin down exactly where my Clasby's came from but I have a general idea. There could be a connection.
