I have been researching the Proffitt surname for a long time.James Proffitt mentioned above, has a wife named Mary.Their children that can be determined are:Martha, Benajah, William, John, Samuel, and David Proffitt. Some of the descendants of this family carry the middle names of Clawson.
Mary Proffitt was still living in 1850 and her place of birth is listed a New Jersey.
The daughter, Martha Proffitt married Robert Scott.Their first three children are:James Proffitt Scott, Jane McKinney Scott, and Mary Closen Proffitt.
The youngest son, David Proffitt, names his son, James Clawson Proffitt. In turn, James Clawson Proffitt has a grandson named Charles Clawson Proffitt.
It is apparent that Proffitt and Clawson's lived near one another in Wilkes Co., early from the deeds listed above.
Clawson researchers have determined that the William Clawson above is born in New Jersey. If Mary Proffitt is a Clawson, she was born in 1774 in NJ, then she might be a younger sister to William Clawson born in 1772 from the naming pattern in the Proffitt family.
Another idea that I have is that the wife of John Proffitt (Phoebe maiden name has not been determined) is also a Clawson.John Proffitt is the brother to James and his wife Mary.William Clawson also was a witness to one of his deeds.John and Phoebe Proffitt moved to Carter Co., TN.John died young and Phoebe remarried to Leonard Hart. She is still living by the 1850 census and she was listed as being born in New Jersey. Her age puts her birth year about 1769.It is not uncommon at all in the early years that brothers might marry sisters of a neighboring family.
I just thought I would post this information that I have gathered so far. It may be useful to the Clawson researchers and provide some new insight and ideas.
