Elizabeth Claborn Mystery
I believe my grandmother's name was Elizabeth Pernicia Claborn Smoot. Elizabeth was the daughter of James and Rachel Claborn, ref., 1870 census. She died about 1885 either in Mansfield, AR area or in IT when my father was 5 years old. The confusion arises from the fact that she was named for two aunts, Elizabeth and Pernicia, daughters of Alfred & Catherine Rhodes Claborn, ref., 1850 census. It was common practice to call children by their second name as shown in the 1860 census where my grandmother was listed as Pernicia while the 1870 census listed her as Elizabeth. She was born in 1852, same year as my grandfather Henry Edward Smoot. The aunt Elizabeth was born in 1843 making her 9 years older than Henry Edward. It would have been very unusual for a man to marry a worman 9 years older than he in those days. The man almost always married a younger woman. I am convinced that the 1852 Elizabeth is my grand-mother because she and Henry were neighbors and of the same age.The LDS records show Henry married to the 1843 Elizabeth and I believe this to be in error.Would like to find some record of what happened to 1843 Elizabeth.Any help greatly appreciated.
