If I have pieced this together correctly, here is the family:
Bluford H. Merchant was the son of John Merchant and Sally (Hardwick) Wright.Susan Clayton was the daughter of Thomas Lewis Clayton and Theodocia (Dicey) Wright.Sally Hardwick first married Francis Wright, the brother of Dicey. He died in Henry Co., KY in 1809 and Sally married John Merchant there in 1815.I think this was also John's second marriage, previously married to Sarah Bishop.Just to keep it interesting, Bluford had a sister named Sarah (Sally) Merchant (m Frederick C. Milton in 1834).
The Merchant family relocated to Montgomery Co., MO between 1819 and 1826 as they appear in the taxpayer list then. You will find 2 John Merchants in the 1830 Montgomery Co., MO census -- the father and I presume a son from his first marriage.
These families joined together in Henry Co., KY in the early 1800s.I think John Merchant was the son of William Merchant and Priscilla Brooks. That line you can trace back to immigrant John Merchant b 1600 in Somerset England and d bef 1670 in Barnstable, MA.
Here are some notes from my files on the Merchants in Montgomery >> Warren Co., MO:
